Rebirth's Story
Pern was not always this desolate place. It was once filled with fresh life and magestic creatures. Thread, the enemy of Pern had long been defeated by Lessa and her riders. Yes, they did live though some don't believe what they have been taught. However this isn't about there story, it's about ours. We were peaceful after the end of the last fall. Dragons were no longer needed, though they still proved useful in that they could transport people and rescue them in other times of need. Still with their true purpose gone they dwindled in numbers significantly.
Before we knew it, there were only three Weyrs left. The names however have been lost long ago. The few remaining Golds were clutching less and less eggs as well, and as time continued to pass on only one Weyr was still standing. It was far into the future though and we had regained the ability to create more advanced technology. The dragons however were not needed and so we did not attempt to revive them. It was a fatal mistake.
Savrine, Dragon Candidate.......
Forgive me for cutting my entry short the last time, but I was needed elsewhere. Thread has started to fall again, though how we were not sure....at least not until recently. It seems that this thread does not stem from Rukbat but from another source. We have named it Motra. Motra, a large meteorite that has taken up the space around Pern's orbit. A similar parasite as to plague lives on it, however this one is much stronger and with the few number of dragons we have, we are unable to defeat it as we should.
Our Gold rider Tearine has said we should find another place to live. Most of the earth around our Weyr has died and refuses to give food. So, we move tomorrow. I only hope that we will find a place to call home on this planet. The holdfolk have already left or died, as have many of the craftsmen and harpers. Perhaps they had the right idea. I would have left too if it were not for my firelizard wanting to stay and that I am needed as a candidate. I am sure that if I impress mine, like the other dragons, will fear this plague of Thread; but they will fight nonetheless.
Savrine, Dragon Candidate...
Finally, after a turn of searching we have found a new home. So many have been lost though it seems we have discovered it almost too late. Still down we go into the tunnels behind the waterfall. It is a network of caverns hidden by a place we have named Terra Falls. It is large, and we have built even more into it, but it is not the same. The dragons dread going beneath the earth, but they must to survive. Gabitz, my gold firelizard, especially hates it. I try to comfort her, though I doubt it works any.
Besides this our Gold Riventh has clutched on the heated sands in the caverns. We do not know how they are ideal for dragon eggs, but somehow they provide the right conditions. A gold egg, thank Faranth is among them. At last we will have another Queen for our little group. Which I was last told numbers 268. Only that few, and among them just barely enough candidates to stand for the newest members.
Savrine, Dragon Candidate....
Disaster has struck today! It has been two turns since my last entry in this diary, and I have much to tell, but none of it seems more important than this. Riventh and her daughter Tazynth both rose today. The two we regret have killed one another in their anger leaving us without a Queen. The bronze dragons as well as the others grieve for this loss. Without them how will we ever hope to return to the surface?
A proposal has been made though, and I shudder at it. They are asking for some of the green riders to try and clutch. The youngest of us such as myself have never made our dragons chew firestone. They had been born after we stopped trying to fight the thread. Eryth is proud to be a Queen, but I fear for the results. Greens weren't meant to clutch. Still, we must try.
Savrine, Green Rider....
Eryth and two other greens have become egg heavy over the last season and today my beautiful dragoness clutched 4 eggs. The others are expected to do the same and the Weyr holds its breath to see what will happen. They are nicely sized. However we do not kid ourselves. None are big enough to even house a bronze unless it is the size of a small brown. Dragons are dragons though and any in this time of need are welcome. We have burrowed into the caverns more now and have made an adequate home for ourselves, still Thread falls periodically though.
Happy news for myself besides Eryth's children is one of my own. I've found that I am with my own young, and I can only hope to be a decent mother. It's not a surprise that the father is the rider of Eryth's champion. T'korah is a wonderful man, and I know we'll be a family as I've always wished. It is getting late though, and the glows are being dimmed by the candidates and drudges. The darkness doesn't bother me anymore though, it's preferred to the Thread outside.
Savrine, Green Rider....
The eggs have all hatched today, 8 more dragons for our group out of 13 laid. That isn't the importance though. A black dragonet was born out of Eryth's largest egg. It is female from what her rider says, the strange thing though is that she glows. I wonder what this means for the future. What will become of us now? Only time will tell....
Savrine, Green Rider....
It's been 60 turns since my grandmother made her last entry in this diary, and after I have discovered it, I decided to make my own as well. Lately the dragons, which by now have mutated into a much different species, have wanted to go outside. After one search team tried however, we fear trying again. They did not return. We can't attempt to find them. My Lynith, my dear Lynith is almost ready to rise soon and I look forward to it. The Queen is looking beautiful and I know she will do us all proud. It is terrible to be Weyrwoman sometimes though. I am young and lack the proper know how that the last one did. Still, I try.
The other interesting thing to happen since my grandmother's last entry is that we have found another type of bondable creature. We call them serpents and they behave much the same way that whers used to when they were alive. They live in waterways among the caverns and sea. Half the size of our dragons currently they are great at gathering fish and performing other needed tasks. The species is entirely water bound though. They can breath air through lungs, but their hides must be kept moist. It is funny to me that these water creatures even have wings of a sort longer than our modern day dragons. Still, they do help them glide through the terrain since they are without legs.
Eveline, Blacklight Rider....
Since Eveline's last entry much has happened in the world of Pern, but most isn't note worthy. The serpents have become integrated into Pernese society more, and the dragons have continued to mutate until they have become what they are today. The two breeds along with their humans created a life underneath Pern behind Terra Falls. However, it is time that they come out again. It has been 250 turns since the new Thread has come. Everytime the Pernese have tried to come out since that first expedition disappeared though, they have seen Thread still in the sky. The presume even to this day that it was an abnormal pass that lasted 5 times the normal length of one.
In reality they have just been an incredibly unlucky group of people. There have been passes regularly, the have just missed them because of paranoia. Finally though they have emerged from their caverns to see clear skies. It is a new world with life around them growing again and animal life that has adapted to the new Pern. Needing to create a hold, the new Weyr first set up Dusk Hold. Then came Dawn Hold soon after which also serves for the time being as Harper Hall. They haven't moved out much, though trader caravans have gone out to search the wilderness.
The Weyr, which still resides in the caverns but also in the cliffs around the Terra Falls and Lake, has been renamed Rebirth Weyr. For that is what this is. It's a Rebirth of civilization to Pern. Currently the Weyr has two Darklight Queens, the black dragonet that had first been seen in Eryth's clutch all those turns ago. Weyrwoman Akilu is young, only 22, but she tries to adapt as well to this new world. Perhaps that is what Rebirth needs, young blood. As far as the Weyr and Holds know, there are no others that have survived.
However, far across the continent up in the mountains another group have hidden away as well. They have not met, and they do not know of each other. Perhpas they never will, but these riders have learned how to battle the thread. The first expedition team didn't die, they Timed it back to grow their numbers. Returned they are strong, and they have dragons that still conform to the old canon. What will happen if these two factions ever meet? As Savrine said long ago in her time of uncertainty, only time will tell.
